TOMS Shoes was founded in 2006 by American entrepreneur Blake Mycoskie after a life-changing trip to Argentina. While traveling, Mycoskie noticed that many children were growing up without shoes—a basic necessity that left them vulnerable to injury and disease. Deeply moved, he created a for-profit company with a simple but powerful model: for every pair of shoes sold, TOMS would give a new pair to a child in need. This groundbreaking concept became known as the One for One® model and sparked a global movement in socially conscious business.
The company’s first product was inspired by the traditional Argentine alpargata, a canvas slip-on shoe with a rope sole, which Mycoskie modernized for everyday wear. TOMS quickly gained popularity, not just for its comfortable and easy-going footwear, but for its mission-driven ethos. As the brand grew, so did its product range—expanding to include sneakers, boots, sandals, and espadrilles, while continuing its commitment to giving back.
Over the years, TOMS evolved beyond shoes, offering eyewear and coffee, each linked to social impact programs such as restoring sight and improving access to clean water. In 2019, TOMS transitioned its giving model to focus on grassroots good, pledging to donate one-third of its profits to support community-based organizations working on mental health, education, and equity.
Today, TOMS remains a pioneer in the world of ethical fashion, proving that business can be a force for positive change—stylish shoes with a purpose.
